Richard & Judy autumn picks announced

Richard & Judy, in partnership with WHSmith, have announced their selection for the autumn bookclub. In the year since the bookclub was launched over three million copies of the selected titles have been sold. The latest crop includes the wonderfully named The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake and the Booker Prize long-listed Jamrach’s Menagerie. The first book to be reviewed is The End of Everything by Megan Abbott, a story of innocence lost and burgeoning sexuality.

Green Zone

No director has yet managed to produce a great film set during the Iraq War. I know Kathryn Bigelow won the Best Director Oscar for The Hurt Locker but that was pretty dull ….

Do you hear the Hollywood stars sing?

The overwhelming success of the Les Miserables 25th anniversary concert has given a boost to the possibility of a film adaptation actually happening. Rumours have been flying around for a while now and it seems almost certain that Tom Hooper will direct and Hugh Jackman will star as Jean Valjean. I’m quite excited by this as I love Jackman’s voice and I think he’ll do the part justice. Some of the other names suggested are a little worrying….

The Confession

The Confession is John Grisham’s latest legal thriller for adults and is currently riding high in the paperback chart. Fans of Grisham’s work are in for a treat when they buy it.

Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week has been a feature in American libraries for the past 29 years but I’ve not seen much coverage in the British media before. UK libraries are coming together from 24th September to highlight the growing issue of censorship and challenges to libraries stocking particular books.

Here we are – the last Bank Holiday Monday until Christmas. I’m sure there’s lots to do but I’m going to stick with the tradition of sitting watching movies…

CWA Daggers Shortlists Announced
