The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

I do love a good drag queen. The hair, the lipstick, the clothes that no woman in her right mind would ever be found dead in and most of all the absolutely bitchy as hell attitude. I once made the fatal mistake during a World Aids Day bingo game and got ripped to shreds by the host(ess) of the competition…

The Reluctant Detective

I was first drawn to Scottish crime novel The Reluctant Detective by the tweets of its author Sinclair Macleod who uses social media to promote this book and its follow up The Good Girl. He claims that his novels are as “Scottish as Irn-Bru and Haggis” and offer “Crime with a Scottish accent” …

Limitless

Bradley Cooper was recently named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, much to the chagrin of Ryan Gosling fans who simply can’t understand why their man has been overlooked. In the past couple of years Cooper has managed to make the jump…

Q returns for Skyfall

It’s just been confirmed that the character of Q will return in the new James Bond film Skyfall. MI6’s technical genius and gadget boffin will be played by Ben Wishaw, a 31 year-old who has previously appeared Brideshead Revisited and the TV series The Hour. This is the first time that Q will be played by an actor younger than Bond and is certainly a bold move….

Houdini’s Magic Ticket

Once upon a time – about 6 weeks ago actually – Dan at Top Ten Movies had a great idea for a blogathon. He invited movie bloggers to think about what they would do with a magic ticket that could transport them into different films. There’s been some great replies and I’ve been meaning to add my own thoughts since the blogathon was announced…

Iron Man

This entry is part 1 of 5 in the series Marvel Avengers

I managed to get through the initial rush of Marvel Comics film adaptations without being troubled by the movies. The Iron Man DVD even lived in my house for a good couple of years without it attracting my interest. Then this summer I went to see Captain America: The First Avenger…

Working it Out

I’ve been quite good with my reading recently. There’s a lot of serious books in my To-Be-Read pile and I’ve been reading classics like Pride and Prejudice and Phantom of the Opera as well as highly acclaimed new books such as Alexander Maksik’s You Deserve Nothing

Con Air

There are some things that films need to be truly great – strong acting, meaningful narrative, subtle direction. Oh and explosions, big explosions. And a toy bunny in peril. Thankfully Con Air has all – or almost all – of these elements in abundance (or at least the elements that really matter anyway) …

Gregory’s Girl

A few weeks ago there was a great discussion on Twitter about High School Movies. One of the questions up for debate was which film most closely represented your own high school experience. I snorted. I went to a comprehensive in a working class area of Glasgow. We didn’t have a prom, no-one burst into song in the middle of the canteen….

Top Ten: Books On My Christmas List

Christmas is coming, Santa’s nearly here. Hooray. I’ll try not to get too excited too early and frustrate everyone but it’s mid-November, perfect timing to start thinking about the festive season. I’m now getting daily text messages from my mum updating me on her shopping…
