Top Ten: 2013 Movies (so far…)

We’re almost half-way through the year so it’s time to have a look back at how 2013 has been so far. Next week I’ll be doing a Top Ten books that I’ve read this year (although not all have been published in 2013) but I’m starting with the Top Ten 2013 Films…

The Place Beyond The Pines

I live in a relatively small town and have only two local cinemas. One is a Vue where the local parking is expensive, the other is a Cineworld with free parking and the opportunity to use an unlimited card. Guess which one I always use? The only problem is that it’s a small cinema and doesn’t always get every major release…

Gangster Squad

One of my favourite websites is launchingfilms.com, the website of the Film Distributors’ Association. In a few short minutes you can see what films are released each week for months in advance. Sometimes even years in advance – for example How To Train Your Dragon 3 (3D) is scheduled for release on Friday 22 July 2016…

Limitless

Bradley Cooper was recently named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, much to the chagrin of Ryan Gosling fans who simply can’t understand why their man has been overlooked. In the past couple of years Cooper has managed to make the jump…

The Ides of March

2011’s star of the year has to be Ryan Gosling. All of a sudden he’s everywhere and getting lots of attention and love. Not least from a number of movie bloggers and guys I speak to on Twitter. I must admit though that I don’t feel the Gosling love as much as some others do. I like him…

5 movies I can’t wait to see… but will just have to!

This summer hasn’t exactly been a classic. Not in terms of the shocking weather and certainly not when you look at what’s been on at the cinema. Harry Potter was the first brilliant blockbuster of the year…

Ides of March Trailer

The Venice International Film Festival opened this week with a showing of George Clooney’s fourth film in the director’s chair – The Ides of March. Feedback so far has been very positive, particularly about Ryan Gosling’s performance. The cast is strong with Clooney, Gosling and the always impressive Philip Seymour Hoffman. The trailer promises a slick political thriller and it’s definitely one of my must-sees for what looks like a very impressive autumn at the cinema. What upcoming releases have caught your eye?

Empire Big Screen – Day Two Review

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series Empire Big Screen (2011)

Guest post by James Eckersley

Having been warned about the organisation at the Big Screen event (Louise recommended bringing a patient face – not something I possess) I was pleasantly surprised that there was minimal effort required to get to our seats in the initial Diamond Ticket holders Showcase in the morning. Giving up phone and camera were the main hardships, but understandable if we were seeing something unfinished that the film-makers didn’t want to get onto the internet out of context.

We saw so much in the initial session that I can only really go into the highlights – there were big reactions from the crowd for exclusive footage from ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ (presented by Guy Ritchie), which looked good. I’ll be interested to see Jared Harris as Moriarty and Stephen Fry play opposite Robert Downey Jnr as Mycroft, a brutal fight scene from Stephen Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ – performed without stunt doubles, and ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ footage that screened at Comic Con.
