Cowboys and Aliens

Total tosh – but fun and enjoyable tosh

The title was the first thing that attracted me to this film. Cowboys AND Aliens in the one movie. That thought alone made it almost unmissable then I learned that Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were the leading mean and that just sealed the deal for me ….

Empire Big Screen – Day Two Review

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series Empire Big Screen (2011)

Guest post by James Eckersley

Having been warned about the organisation at the Big Screen event (Louise recommended bringing a patient face – not something I possess) I was pleasantly surprised that there was minimal effort required to get to our seats in the initial Diamond Ticket holders Showcase in the morning. Giving up phone and camera were the main hardships, but understandable if we were seeing something unfinished that the film-makers didn’t want to get onto the internet out of context.

We saw so much in the initial session that I can only really go into the highlights – there were big reactions from the crowd for exclusive footage from ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ (presented by Guy Ritchie), which looked good. I’ll be interested to see Jared Harris as Moriarty and Stephen Fry play opposite Robert Downey Jnr as Mycroft, a brutal fight scene from Stephen Soderbergh’s ‘Haywire’ – performed without stunt doubles, and ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ footage that screened at Comic Con.

Empire Big Screen Day has arrived

This entry is part 1 of 3 in the series Empire Big Screen (2011)

Today I’m attending Empire’s BIG SCREEN event at the o2 in London. I’m looking forward to preview screenings of some of the summer’s hottest films, as well as interviews and discussions with producers, directors, set designers, renowned reviewers and journalists and a wide range of other film experts.

First up this morning is showcase sessions with 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures. I absolutely love getting to the cinema in time for the trailers so watching two hours of extended footage and previews is a dream. I understand that 20th Century Fox will be bringing along special footage from Titanic 3D. It’ll certainly be fascinating to see what James Cameron has done.

A tie at the top

I’ve never heard of this before but there’s a dead heat at the top of the US box office. Both Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs have earned $36.2 million dollars on their opening weekend. I’m sure that over the next couple of days one or the other will take a lead but for the moment it’s a tie.

I don’t see this as a great result for Cowboys & Aliens – surely Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig would have been expected to beat some CGI little blue men?
